Bioscience Facilities 

The UCS Biosciences department has a range of facilities, enabling the learning experience to be as engaging as possible. We have three main laboratories, the largest of which is the Walker Teaching Laboratory. 

The teaching laboratory is where most of the first and second year undergraduate practical sessions take place. We have facilities for microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, histology, biochemistry, anatomy, and microscopy. The equipment used includes PCR, qPCR, gel and protein electrophoresis, chromatography, spectrophotometry and nanodrop spectrophotometry, microscopes (including fluorescence), centrifuges, along with equipment needed to learn the more fundamental aspects of bioscience, such as balances to weigh out chemicals, liquid handling with pipettes, and of course computers to aid in statistical analysis. 

Our second lab is the Walker Molecular Laboratory, occasionally used for first and second year undergraduate practical sessions, but mainly used for final year undergraduate and postgraduate students. This laboratory contains much of the same equipment as our teaching laboratory, with an additional capacity for some basic cell culture and image analysis.

Our final laboratory is the Walker Cell Culture laboratory. This laboratory contains class II biosafety cabinets, along with other equipment, such as CO2 incubators needed for mammalian and microbial cell culture. This laboratory is mainly used for our final year undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Musical Theatre Facilities

Musical Theatre at UCS is located in the Heart of Shrewsbury and mainly utilises the wonderful Theatre Severn. The students have access to the following spaces for rehearsal and performance:

  • The 250-seated Walker Theatre, which can be transformed from a black box space, into a 500-standing venue for live music as well as cabaret seated events. 
  • The Dance Studio, which incorporates natural light, a fully sprung floor and high-tech sound system. Our dance studio gives our student performers the best possible facilities to train and develop their talents. It is also home to our portable piano.
  • We also have use of the Haydn Smith Room. This is one of our lecture and rehearsal spaces. It is equipped with projector and screen as well as a fully equipped sound system and portable piano.

In Guildhall we also have use of a Musical Theatre seminar room and a high-end, fully air conditioned and equipped sound booth for professional recordings, rehearsals, editing and mixing.

Health and Exercise Science Facilities

The UCS Centre for Active Living is situated on the first floor of the Guildhall. The majority of taught practical sessions take place in three spaces - a teaching/research lab, an active learning/gym and a clinical health assessment room. We place a strong emphasis on learning by doing. This practice-based learning is also extended beyond these spaces to include 300 hours of placements in real health, exercise and rehabilitation settings in Shrewsbury and the surrounding area. 

The core equipment not only includes what is usually found in a typical fitness gym and rehabilitation clinic, but advanced equipment to measure and analyse breathing, metabolic and cardiovascular responses, muscular function and power, and key health-measures of body composition, circulation and blood quality (blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, oxygen saturation).

The gym enables students to use their clinical skills alongside their nationally recognised professional qualifications in exercise and rehabilitation (which they gain as part of their course), to work with clients who need to improve their health, sporting performance or require clinical rehabilitation (such as cardiac, cancer and obesity/diabetes rehabilitation, as well as bone and balance problems). Students also undertake consultations and motivational interviewing.  When the space is not being used for teaching it is used for research and includes examples such as the assessment of caloric cost and the development of technology and apps for physical activity, the use of devices to improve health and promote quality of life.

In all these key areas students are challenged to understand how the same equipment and spaces have value for being both a skilled health practitioner and an exercise scientist.
