As you make your way around the town, you will find an array of historical and architectural discoveries, with around 660 listed buildings in the centre alone! What’s more, as the birthplace of Charles Darwin, you can find various monuments in Shrewsbury dedicated to his early life.

Festivals and Events

Shrewsbury enjoys a vibrant cultural scene and hosts several music festivals throughout the year, including the celebrated Shrewsbury Folk Festival and The Big Busk, as well as the International Cartoon Festival, Shrewsbury Food Festival and the Winter Festival.


If you love the great outdoors, Shrewsbury is on the doorstep of the Shropshire Hills, providing a host of hiking, cycling and climbing opportunities. Shrewsbury is also a Cycling Town, as chosen by Cycling England, and for those who like to race, the three-day Giro Del Mon race is a key date in the cycling social calendar. In addition to further sporting facilities within Shrewsbury itself, there's also rowing and kayaking opportunities along the River Severn.



When it comes to nights out, in 2019, Shrewsbury was awarded the coveted ‘Purple Flag’ status in recognition of its night-time economy for the fourth year running. As a student of University Centre Shrewsbury, you are automatically a member of Students' Union Shrewsbury. Students' Union Shrewsbury operates to enhance your student experience. This is done through social, sporting and non-sporting activities and through representation of all of our students – locally and nationally. All Students’ Union facilities are provided by the Chester Students’ Union, and are built on many years of providing a fantastic student experience.
