I have recently accepted a job with Shropshire community NHS trust with the public health nursing team working with teenagers and young people in north of Shropshire. My experiences at UCS have helped me gain valuable experience working with multi disciplinary teams that will no doubt benefit me in my new role.

After having worked in sports development for a number of years I had come to a bit of a crossroads in my career, I had always wanted to undertake a degree but had always put it off. After returning home from living abroad I knew that I wanted to continue my education but was at a loss as to what exactly I wanted to do.

I had previously undertaken my gym instructor qualification and had a keen interest in health and physical activity having coached gymnastics since I was 14. I started to research degrees and found the BSc Health and Exercise Science at University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS), all of the modules really appealed to me and the amount of practical work was a big bonus as I am someone who learns more by doing rather than listening.

The small class sizes worked perfectly for me as if I had attended a much larger university I would have found it very daunting.  I felt the support that I got because of the small groups really helped me to achieve my degree.

In my final year, I was able to adapt my Level 4 qualifications to suit my needs and for me the Cancer Rehab qualification was really important.  I had personal reasons for wanting to undertake the qualification having had relatives who had unfortunately passed away due to cancer. From the course, I could see the benefits this had for patients and I developed a keen interest in Cancer rehabilitation.  I was on placement at my local Cancer Rehab sessions.  In addition, I completed qualifications in Obesity and Diabetes as well as Cardiac Rehabilitation.  I also spent time on my placement working in Cardiac Rehabilitation.  My placements showed me how worthwhile all exercise rehabilitation sessions are and I gained a lot of practical knowledge and I was able to demonstrate what I had learnt during lectures.  I was also fortunate to get a job where I completed my first placement and this enabled me to work with highly qualified and competent instructors that in turn benefitted my degree as I was able to have the support of not only my lecturers who went above and beyond but also the staff on all my placements too.

For the future I will carry on working in exercise referral as I truly enjoy it and see the benefit it has for the clients and patients that attend.  I have recently accepted a job with Shropshire community NHS trust with the public health nursing team working with teenagers and young people in north of Shropshire.  My experiences at UCS have helped me gain valuable experience working with multi disciplinary teams that will no doubt benefit me in my new role.  I am thankful for the opportunities I have had through out my 3 years at UCS and I would really recommend the degree in Health and Exercise Science.
