Our Open Day is only a few weeks away, and with this in mind Programme Lead for Medical Genetics and Medical Science Dr Elizabeth O’Brien shares her thoughts on why all budding life scientists should consider coming to study at University Centre Shrewsbury.

An Open Day is a great opportunity to get a feel for a university. Is it somewhere you would feel happy living and studying for three years? It can be a life-changing experience and to get the most out of your time there, you need to feel comfortable. Soak up the atmosphere as soon as you walk in, first impressions are important.

If you have a particular course in mind, use the day to speak to tutors and find out what you will be studying. Tutors love to be engaged in their own subjects with interested students so ask as many questions as you like. Tutors are usually happy to give out their contact details so don’t be afraid to ask for them and then you can email any questions you think of later.

Make good use of the student ambassadors, they’ll give it to you straight. As a tutor my favourite times are spent in the laboratory working with students in practical sessions. It can often be more relaxed than a lecture, discussion and questions flow more easily.

My proudest moment so far has got to be seeing the results of our first Bioscience graduates this year. They all worked extremely hard and I am very excited about our first graduation ceremony in September.

Shrewsbury is a beautiful town in which to live and study. Our new university centre allows us to get to know our students well and provide a very personal experience, you will never be one of a large number in a lecture theatre. We are able to provide a great level of support, as part of a close-knit community.

Have a look around our website and check out the Bioscience Facebook page for more of an idea of what we do but the best way to get to know us is to pop along to our Open Day, come with an open mind and plenty of questions and have a great day.

Our Open Day is taking place Saturday 19th October. You can book your place here.
