There’s lots of things to look forward to when starting university. Joining a sports team or a society might be top of your list! It’s a great opportunity to try out something new whilst meeting people with similar interests to you.
We understand that with everything that has happened this year, you might be feeling wary about playing sport or joining a society. That’s why we’ve been working alongside University of Chester to introduce ‘Chester Rules’!
‘Chester Rules’
‘Chester Rules’ is our new initiative to make sure that sport and activity can still be a part of your university experience starting this September. ‘Chester Rules’ are socially-distanced customised games that can be played without having to worry about being in close contact with others. Working closely with University of Chester, we are introducing ‘Chester Rules’ to ensure that sport and activity can carry on as close to normal as possible, whilst also prioritising student safety.
Take Your Pick
The best thing about ‘Chester Rules’ is the variety of sports and activities you can get involved with. Our Sports and Active Lifestyle Team have worked hard to come up with new and exciting ways for you to enjoy sport alongside your studies. There will be the opportunity to enter leagues - whether you specialise in playing pool, table tennis or darts, why not challenge your friends and see how you get on?
For all the budding runners, we have a ‘Couch-to-5K’ programme which involves routes around Shrewsbury’s beautiful quarry park. Or, if you’d prefer, there’s the opportunity to take part in a variety of virtual activities, whether it be fitness classes or yoga sessions, there’s something for everyone!
Become a Member
If you’ve missed being able to go to your local gym or leisure centre over the past few months, then you’ll be pleased to know that every University Centre Shrewsbury student gets a free membership to both Shrewsbury Sports Village and The Quarry Leisure Centre. All you have to do is sign up! If you’re looking to make use of sports pitches, courts or even a climbing wall, then Shrewsbury Sports Village is for you. Or perhaps you’d prefer to head to The Quarry and make the most of the pool and the health suite facilities? Whatever your interests, there’s plenty to choose from.
Welcome Week
Unsure what to join? Then Welcome Week is the perfect opportunity to try out as many things as possible. We will be hosting a number of different taster sessions for you throughout Welcome Week so don’t be shy and give them all a go!
We know that the events of this year have complicated the idea of sports and activity but, with ‘Chester Rules’, we trust that there is something for everyone to get involved with. Saying that, if you have your own socially-distanced sports idea and would like to introduce it to University Centre Shrewsbury, then simply speak to our Students’ Union and get the ball rolling!
All sports and activities featured in this blog, including the use of gym, pool and spa facilities, will be running in accordance with and responding to the government’s COVID-19 guidelines.
