Like most things this year, results day (13th August) is going to feel a bit different. Despite all of the uncertainty, it’s important to keep in mind that for many of you it will be a time to celebrate, and even if things don’t quite go to plan, there are still so many options available.
So, take a look at our advice and info about results day so you know exactly what’s what.
Be ready
Have your UCAS Track sign in details handy and make sure you’re available on results day, because UCAS will not be able to speak to anyone other than you about your application details (unless you give them nominated access to speak on your behalf). Plus, if you choose to apply to another university via Clearing, it’s you they will want to speak to.
Some Scenarios
There are a few scenarios that could play out when you get your results, so it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with them – we’ve tried to cover them all below.
No decision (yet).
First things first – if there doesn’t appear to be a decision in Track, then give the university in question a call.
You’ve got what you need.
The most obvious scenario is that you get the grades you were hoping for. If that’s the case – amazing! Over the course of the day, Track will update and you’ll be able to accept your place. Make sure you read the confirmation letter from your university as it may contain information outlining what you need to do next. And, of course, go and celebrate!
You’ve outdone yourself.
If you do better than expected and exceed your offer (well done you), you may want to enquire about courses with higher entry requirements at other universities. This is called Adjustment and you can find out more info about it from UCAS here.
Your results aren’t what you were hoping for.
If you don’t quite get the grades you need for your university choices, they may still accept you, so don’t lose hope straight away. They may offer you another course, which could either be a course with slightly lower entry grades within a similar subject area, or a Foundation Year course. Foundation Years have been designed for those who wish to complete an undergraduate course but do not have the necessary academic qualifications to enter directly onto the first year. If applicants display the ability and commitment required, our Foundation Years provide the opportunity to obtain an undergraduate degree. When you successfully complete your Foundation Year, you will be able to progress onto the next year of your extended course. If neither of those options are available, then it’s time to look at which universities still have courses that you’re interested in via Clearing.
You’d like to question your grades.
If you feel that your grades don’t accurately reflect your performance based on the criteria being used for results this year, then you may choose to query them. To do this you will need to request a review or appeal, which can be done through your school or college. Make sure you let your university choices know that this is happening.

We know it’s been a tough year with no exams, no leavers’ party and no prom. It perhaps feels like your final year in school or college came to quite a sudden end and the months after can’t have been easy. But now, it’s time to start a brand new experience at university – so make sure you take some time to get excited about it!
