I’ve been offered my dream job at Nuffield Health Medical Centre in Canary Wharf as a Health & Wellbeing Physiologist. UCS has amazing staff who genuinely care about your wellbeing, offer support whenever you need it and always make sure there is never a dull moment in the day!

International Health and Exercise Science Graduate Christian Heenan went from moving to a new country with little prior scientific knowledge to obtaining a first-class honours degree and his dream job as a Health & Wellbeing Physiologist at Nuffield Health Medical Centre in Canary Wharf.

“After my eldest brother passed away from cancer, I was extremely determined to work in the health industry, preferably rehabilitating patients with chronic disease. I came across Health & Exercise Science at UCS through clearing, the course contents covered everything I wanted to learn and more! On top of that, small classes meant that I could easily seek help from professors who were all well renowned in their fields. I believed the extra tuition in small groups was the key to my success.

This course appealed to me over other health science courses because it heavily focused upon gaining practical experience with real patients/clients within clinical rehabilitation and recreational exercise settings. It also provided me with the opportunity to obtain several nationally recognised level 3/4 exercise qualifications that are mandatory for employment within the health industry. If you are looking to get into employment straight after university, this is the best course hands down! Most courses I have come across do not provide enough practical experience and will only provide one additional exercise qualification if you’re lucky! This makes finding a job more difficult than it should be after university.”

The Future

“I feel proud that I will forever be part of the first ever UCS Alumni group, but also feel excited for what the future holds! This degree has drastically improved my confidence and has fully prepared me to work within the health and fitness industry, specifically Clinical Exercise Physiology, Cardiac Rehabilitation, GP Exercise Referral, Obesity & Diabetes, Falls Prevention and Personal Training.

After receiving my results, I was stuck at a crossroads trying to decide between working in the industry to gain experience or to pursue a Masters Degree. After a vigorous recruitment process I’ve just been offered my dream job at Nuffield Health Medical Centre in Canary Wharf as a Health & Wellbeing Physiologist! This will require me to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to help patients achieve their health and wellness goals through exercise, nutrition, behaviour change, stress management and sleep. Nuffield Health will also provide me with additional ECG accreditation, phlebotomy/ILS training, cancer rehabilitation training and a Masters Degree in Physiology! I am looking forward to my new job and am excited about pursuing the career path of a clinical physiologist.”

What Makes UCS Unique

“The support from the staff was second to none! I went from not knowing the first thing about science and physiology (My school/college did not allow me to take science at GCSE or A level) to pursuing a heavily science-based degree! There were a lot of gaps in my learning compared to all the other students, however John, Sue and Chris believed in me and helped me every step of the way to achieving first-class honours. I believe obtaining hundreds of hours of practical experience alongside the additional level 4 exercise qualifications allowed me to compete against all the other applicants at Nuffield who had their Master’s Degree.

UCS has amazing staff who genuinely care about your wellbeing, offer support whenever you need it and always make sure there is never a dull moment in the day! Having such small classes allows you to get to know all staff on a personal level which is something very exclusive to UCS! If you are looking to study somewhere with awesome staff who genuinely care about you… UCS is the place! Also studying in Shrewsbury can be very beneficial as you can easily find a balance between study, work and partying! All good things come to an end, but I will definitely miss my time at UCS!”
