Course:

Being a smaller University means there are multiple unique opportunities and experiences available. I would advise students to take these up and make the most of them, I have been on many trips and had the opportunity to work with local business and organisations within the sports industry which I would not have experienced at a larger university.

Sport Management graduate Kate made the most of her time at University Centre Shrewsbury – taking advantage of the excellent industry links and work placements to gain an advantage when it comes to life after university.

"The course covered many aspects associated with management in sport, business and events. As we shared modules across three degree courses we were able to learn and experience multiple areas specific to each, as well as those involved in all three. The lecturers supported and prepared us for the next stage as they were able to offer their knowledge and expertise based on their experience in careers outside of their role as lecturers.

Both my personal academic tutor and lecturers have been supportive throughout my time at UCS. They have always been on hand to offer advice and clarity on both the course and wider world. They promote the various opportunities available both at UCS and linked through other local businesses and organisations. They have our best interests at heart wanting us all to succeed both at university and as we enter careers following our UCS experience.

Throughout my time at UCS I have gained confidence and knowledge I did not think I would be able to prior to starting the course. I had never really considered university whilst studying for my A Levels so UCS provided me with the ideal opportunity to study and learn about a topic I have always been interested in whilst staying close to home. I have learnt that there are several careers and aspects of the industry that I can explore and confidently fulfil a role within. I have been able to complete pieces of work such as presentations and projects such as my dissertation which I would have never considered or thought I would have been able to do before starting the course.

The insight into the sports industry has been the biggest highlight, I have been able to visit two top flight football grounds. Going behind the scenes gave me the opportunity to meet people and learn about their job roles and responsibilities. Working with local businesses such as Well Meadow consultancy to produce my own business idea and completing an internship and five-week work placement with Energize (the County Sports Partnership) gave me the opportunity to work and learn practically. Being a smaller University means there are multiple unique opportunities and experiences available. I would advise students to take these up and make the most of them, I have been on many trips and had the opportunity to work with local business and organisations within the sports industry which I would not have experienced at a larger university.

I would definitely recommend UCS to others because the experience is what makes it unique. The lecturers and support staff are always on hand to support students in achieving the highest grades possible as well as promoting unique experiences only available at a smaller campus such as UCS. At UCS you are recognised as an individual, building relationships with teaching staff and support staff who are all on hand to offer their support to help students achieve the best they can."
